Greeneville Stacks


As branded smokestacks go, it doesn’t get much better than these around here.  These are in Greeneville, each a testimony to better days.  Austin Tobacco Company, processing burley (why is it called burley tobacco?  Wiki was silent on the issue, but Merriam-Webster hazards a guess that it was from the name of a tobacco grower in Kentucky) was huge through most of the 20th century, with major warehouses in downtown Greeneville…and Pet, in 1930 or so, set up an ice cream plant right downtown next to the railroad.
